Sharing the Gospel

The greatest thing you and I will ever do is share the Gospel with others. As followers of Jesus, sharing the Gospel with others is one of the greatest privileges and joys we can experience on planet earth; it’s also Jesus’ last instruction to His disciples and to us (Matthew 28:18-20).

The most important question anyone can ever ask and answer is “Do you know for sure you’re going to heaven?” This question deals with where we will spend eternity and nothing is more important. Think of anything you want, nothing you can talk about will ever be as important as talking to someone about eternal life.

There are two approaches I take when meeting someone, they are called “Minimal Evangelism” and “Conversational Evangelism”.

Minimal Evangelism is where you hand someone a LMIQ E-Card (Gospel Tract) and ask them if you can give them something to read when they get a chance. Minimally, this places the Word of God in their hand. From there I pray that God would use it to draw (John 6:44) that person to a personal relationship with Him.

Conversational Evangelism takes Minimal Evangelism one step further. Either before or after I hand someone a LMIQ Card, I ask them the first of four questions – “Can I ask you a personal question?” Sometimes I will skip question 1 and ask question 2 – “Do you know for sure you’re going to Heaven?” It just depends on the nature of the meeting, and the leading of God’s Spirit.

Additional information about talking to people about Jesus:

The key to talking to people about Jesus is asking 4 questions. People don’t like to be lectured; however, they do like to talk. That’s why asking questions is the best way to talk to people about Jesus.

I prefer the direct method. I believe it’s the most honest approach and avoids beating around the bush. No matter what the relationship, the best way to introduce the topic of the Gospel is by asking Question #1 – “Can I ask you a personal question?” This braces them for the next question and allows you to ask what I believe is the most personal thing you can talk to someone about – their eternal destiny. I have never had someone say no to this question, and I’m usually talking to people I don’t know and who don’t know me.

After the person has given me permission to ask them a personal question I ask them the most important question (Question #2) – “Do you know for sure you’re going to Heaven?” Usually people are surprised by this question because it wasn’t something they were expecting. The majority of times people will say they believe they are or hope they are. No matter how they respond, you follow up with Question # 3 – “What do you understand it takes to get to heaven?” This question will identify what they believe it takes to get to heaven.

Most people believe that if they are going to heaven it’s because they are basically a good person. Most people wrongly believe that good works is what gets us to heaven. According to the Bible we get to heaven by faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 says – 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. [also see Titus 3:5]

After someone gives a works answer I ask them Question # 4 – “What do you base that on?” or “Why do you believe that?” They usually come up with something other than the correct answer because the Bible does not support salvation by good works.

Once you ask what the basis of someone’s belief is, there are a lot of directions the conversation could go. The main thing to remember is to continue asking questions. The reason we ask questions is to engage them in a discussion and to reveal their ability or inability to back up what they think they know about eternal life. This isn’t mean spirited, it is simply a fact that most people haven’t thought through this most important topic and can’t explain why they believe what they believe. [As followers of Jesus we are commanded to “…Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have…” 1 Peter 3:15.]

Andy Stanley is the founder of North Point Ministries, Inc. (NPM). Each Sunday, more than 36,000 people attend one of NPM’s six Atlanta-area churches. To learn more and to access free online resources, visit www.northpointministries.org.

At North Point Online you can find current and past message series that I believe will help you grow in understanding what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Click here to go to the “Messages” page. You can also watch NP messages on Roku.

Great messages series no longer on the list of messages:

Why in The World

Learn why in the world God would leave Heaven                                           and come to earth to live as one of us.

AskIt

‘I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate, I do . . . For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.’

In The MeanTime

What do you do when there’s nothing you can do? What do you do when you have a problem that seems to have no solution?

Re Solution

The cure for New Year’s Resolutions. If you want to become a better person, do something to make the world a better place.

By the way, you can watch as many messages as you would like. They are not just a “Sunday thing”. Enjoy!

If you are a new follower of Jesus or would like to learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, let me encourage you to begin with the “Starting Point” series. Click here to begin.

Additional “Starting Point” resources that will help you with this series are the Starting Point Conversation Guide, the Starting Point Website, and the North Point App. Click on the blue links to go to those resources.

The Starting Point Conversation Guide is an excellent book that will provide you with a written record of the main points from the Starting Point messages and will help you reflect on central questions of faith and life.

You can purchase a hard copy of the book or you can download the guide to your Kindle. I recommend the Kindle version because it allows you to access all of your Starting Point resources on your computer and smart phone which allows you to highlight and write notes. Click here to download the free Kindle App.

The Starting Point Website will provide you with additional resources for each lesson in the “Starting Point Conversation Guide”.

After completing the Starting Point series, I would encourage you to watch the following series in this order: “Christian”, “Follow”, then “Brand New”. All of the North Point messages can also be watched or listened to on the North Point App.

If you are not currently attending a local church, let me encourage you to get caught up with the current series and then watch weekly to help stay encouraged. Most of the newer messages provide the full church service (contemporary worship music and message).

North Point Online is a supplement, not a substitute, for you being a part of a local church.

As awesome as North Point is, and as helpful as the resources may be, each of us were placed here on planet earth (Acts 17:26) to be a part of a local church (Hebrews 10:25). Therefore, use and enjoy these resources to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus, but make sure you are using your gifts and talents to impact your community for Jesus as a member of a Bible believing, Bible teaching church in your community.

Feeding Yourself on the Road

by Tim Leahy

For those who travel for a living, I want to encourage you to develop your relationship with God utilizing the resources we have available to us as we are driving down the road or relaxing in the sleeper cab/hotel room etc…

With today’s technology, we have an enormous amount of information available to us like satellite radio, smart phones, the internet…

Satellite Radio (Sirius, XM, and Sirius XM) is like cable TV. It provides us with a lot of channels to help keep us entertained as we’re rolling down the road. Let me encourage you to use some of that time to listen to Christian music and Biblical teaching.

Kirk Franklin’s Praise – Chanel 64

The Internet – click here for recommended websites.

Apps – apps are basically little, self-contained programs, used to enhance existing functionality, hopefully in a simple, more user-friendly way on one of today’s modern smart phones or computers.

Where you get your apps from depends on what kind of smart phone you’re using. Three of today’s biggest smart phone platforms – Android, iOS (Apple) and Windows Phone – all come with browsable desktop websites and accompanying app stores that arrive built-in as part of the phone’s operating system.

Here are two Apps I highly recommend:

North Point Online – Messages from North Point Community Church. Click here for additional information about North Point Online.

YouVersion Bible – A free Bible on your phone, tablet, and computer. YouVersion is a simple, ad-free Bible that brings God’s Word into your daily life. YouVersion also provides you with an audio Bible.
